What is it about?

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

My Opinion:

It’s been a year since I wanted to read this book and after the slump Heir of Fire produced me be I needed to read a fantasy book, I picked up this one.

Ok, in this book we’re settled in Serra, a long time ago the Empire conquered the Scholars, now the Empire has the power and the Scholars are slaves. We have two POV’S, Laia who is a scholar girl who lost her parents for an unknow reason when she was young and now se lost her grandparents when his brother got arrested by the Masks. Apparently he’s brother betrayed the Empire so now he has to pay them back. The second POV’S is from Elias. Elias is a Martial soldier in Blackcliff, the mask training school owned by the Empire. Elias is totally different from the Masks, he thinks the things they do are inhuman and wrong, he just wants to get out of there as soons as possible. Laia without the help of anyone decides to ask for help to a group of rebels, there she decides to get into Blackcliff as an spy for the Rebels in exanchage for the  rescue from her brother. Laia and Elias paths get intertwined and they’ll have to fight together.

I’d like that I liked this book, and enjoyed it, loved the characters but they were other things that didn’t worked for me. For example the world building needed to more more explained but I think we’ll se more of that in the second book. Also Laia character at the beggining might me a little annoying but I ended up liking her. Elias for me was the best character in this book, he’s just AHH. I need to hug him. When both of them met each other is cool. The second characters well, I hated them lol. Specially Helene and Marcus I CAN’T STAND THEM. ALSO THE COMMANDANT. But in other part I liked Izzi. Poor girl damn. We have weird scary creatures, and violence, blood. Yikes. The book isn’t slow or boring. It has a lot of action which was great! A lot of things happens. It keeped me hooked the whole time in the trials. SO DAMN GOOD. Despite the ups and downs it’s a cool book. YES, it has love but it barely happens. I see a love triangle also. This books ends like WOAH I NED MORE. I really need to read the next books which comes out this August 30th. I’m digging to it.

¿Have you read it? You want to read it? What are your toughts? 🙂
